Time, travel and scheduling: the practical side

Whether a study fits into your life is a real question. Here is how to estimate what taking part would ask of you.

The short version

  • Ask for a full visit schedule with lengths, not just the number of visits.
  • Ask what travel, parking, or lodging help exists, and whether you are reimbursed.
  • Remote visits are more common than they used to be, but not universal.

1Count the hours, not just the visits

“Six visits” can mean six short check-ins or six all-day appointments. Ask for a typical length for each, how long the study lasts overall, and how much flexibility exists to reschedule.

2Travel and logistics

  • How far is the nearest site, and is there parking?
  • Are there evening, weekend, or remote visit options?
  • Are mileage, transit, or lodging reimbursed, and how quickly?
  • Is a companion allowed or required for any visit?

3Work, school and caregiving

Ask whether the study team can provide a note for your employer or school, and which visits are hardest to move. If you care for someone, ask whether a visit might run long. Being realistic now is kinder to everyone than dropping out later.

4Compensation, if any

Some studies pay for time and travel. Payment is meant to cover those costs, not to persuade you. It should be described in the consent form, along with how and when it is paid.
